On Monday 12th May 2025 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Red Flags, Green Flags: Modern Psychology for Everyday Drama by Dr Ali Fenwick.
In this summary of Red Flags, Green Flags by Dr Ali Fenwick. I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
Red Flags, Green Flag is based around 24 red flags. They are grouped into 4 sections:
- Family and Friendship
- Work Relationships
- Dating
- Romantic Relationships
These 4 sections are between a preface and concluding thoughts.
For each of the red flags, Dr Ali will discuss the red flag, share some background around the red flag and talk about how it isn’t always a red flag. Then there are questions to ask to help you decide whether someone’s behaviour is or isn’t a red flag.
The red flags discussed vary massively from ‘the impact of birth order on sibling rivalry’, ‘office politics’, ‘love bombing’ and ‘when your partner gaslights you’. What is especially interesting is how Dr Ali challenges you to look at red flags. In the preface Dr Ali states that “learning to distinguish true red flags from green flags is an important skillset to develop.” and we live in a world where many now will see a ‘red flag’ and then automatically want nothing to do with a specific person. But what if we are wrong?
Dr Ali really wants to challenge how we decide what is and isn’t a red flag or green flag, but also how we behave based on identifying red flag or green flag behavior. Dr Al has their own framework for approaching RED and GREEN flags.
The concluding thoughts reminds the reader that the aim is to move from default thinking to reflective thinking. To be able to stop genuine red flag behaviours (in others and ourself) and then having the skills to be able to address those red behaviours.
That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of Red Flags, Green Flags: Modern Psychology for Everyday Drama by Dr Ali Fenwick.
