How to become the type of person you want to be

Is there a big gap between the person you are today and the person you want to be? If you answered yes don’t worry! Wanting to grow as a person and in this post, you will find out exactly how to narrow that gap and how to become the type of person you want to be sooner rather than later.

 

1. Identify what type of person you want to become.

One approach you can use when setting goals is the BE, DO, HAVE model. If you haven’t come across the model before you simply write your goals based on what you want to BE, what you want to DO and what you want to HAVE. To find out more about the BE, DO, HAVE model check out this post.

Often it is easy to identify what you want to DO and HAVE, but for some, the BE aspect is harder.

If you struggling to clearly identify who you want to become think about people you admire. This could be friends, family or famous people. What is it about the people you admire? Often the characteristics we admire in others highlights what characteristics we wish we possessed or exhibited more often.

Also, think about your goals and consider what type of person would achieve those goals.

Write all of the traits down in a list. As with any goal it is key to write down exactly what you want to achieve.

 

2. Think about the actions you need to take in order to become the person you want to be

Now that you are clear on the type of person you want to become you need to work out how you become that person. What are the actual things you will need to do?

Maybe you said you wanted to be healthier. Now you need to break it down into something actionable. What does that mean in terms of your eating, drinking, exercise routine, sleep etc?

Or maybe you said you wanted to become a confident speaker. Do you need to sign up for speaking classes? Book speaking gigs? Set time aside every week to practice a new speech?

Find a way to turn an intangible quality into clear actions that you can take.

 

3. Take the necessary actions whilst also behaving like you are already that person today

You know who you want to be and you know how to become that person. Now it is time to get on with it! Start taking the necessary actions.

AND also start behaving like you are already that person. Too often people think they will behave a certain way once X. The key to accelerating your success is to ‘Act As If’.
