HOW TO REINVENT YOURSELF AT ANY AGE

1. Acknowledge who you are right now

Before you can start reinventing yourself it is essential to have a real understanding of who you are right now. Taking an honest look at yourself is difficult but being honest at the beginning will make the reinvention process so much easier. Write down what type of person you are right now and how others perceive you. Depending on your motives behind your reinvention it is likely that you want to make the change for both yourself internally but also how you are perceived externally. Therefore, it is essential right now to capture how you feel about yourself and how you are perceived by others.

2. Visualise your future

By this point, you should be super clear on the present situation so it is time to start dreaming about the future. Think about reinventing yourself and the person you’d like to be in the future. Try to imagine as many different aspects of your life as possible (your health, relationships, finances, career etc). The more detailed you can be the better. Write down as much as you can about the life you imagine for yourself and the person you’ve become in order to have that life.

3. Identify what really matters to you

As part of reinventing yourself, you should take a moment to really identify what matters to you. It is easy when you are reinventing yourself due to a major life change to act on impulse and make decisions based on your emotions at that moment of time, but this can be detrimental. To avoid this happening to you identify what really matters to you. What are your core values in life? When you know your core values you can ensure that you evaluate any reinvention idea you come up with and test that the reinvented you is aligned with your values.

4. Create a plan for reinventing yourself

By this point, you should have a clear idea about what you want the new version of you to be like and you should have examined this reinvented version of you against your values and be confident in your choice to do this reinventing. Now with any transformation, you don’t go from A to B in an instant. It is a journey or a process and you need to create a plan for that reinventing process.

5. Have the courage to follow the plan through

Having a plan is one thing but following a plan is another. Reinventing yourself takes courage. You might be taking some drastic actions that feel very uncomfortable. You’ll likely question if you are doing the right thing. That is when going back to your vision is key and knowing that in the long-term this is the best thing you can be doing with yourself.

6. Change your environment

To reinvent yourself you need to do a mixture of internal and external work. Taking actions and behaving differently will help you to reinvent yourself. However, to step into becoming this new person you’ll probably also need to make changes in your environment.

Take a close look at where you live, work and play. Are these environments a reflection of the person you want to become? If not, what environments would the new version of you be in and how can you start being in those environments too.

It is also important to look at the people in your environment. If you are reinventing yourself then it is likely that there will need to be changes in the people you associate with too.

7. Be patient

Reinventing yourself won’t happen in an instant. You can’t change your habits overnight and as you try and change yourself it is natural to fall back into old ways, but stick to the plan, keep on taking action and know that reinventing yourself may take some time, but it will be worth it in the long run.

There you have it. You now know how to reinvent yourself at any age.

Making the decision to reinvent yourself isn’t an easy decision and it is likely during the reinventing process that there will be moments when you want to stop. However, with a clear intention on why you need to reinvent yourself and by following these steps you’ll be able to do it.

In the comments, I would love to know how you’d like to reinvent yourself.
