On Monday 2nd October 2023 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed The Power of Neuroplasticity by Shad Helmstetter Ph.D.

 

In this summary of The Power of Neuroplasticity by Shad Helmstetter Ph.D I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.

 

The first chapters of the book are focused on exploring neuroplasticity so the reader gets to understand the term and how it works. Whereas we used to think that the human brain became fixed after a certain age it has now been shown the brain changes throughout our lifetime. That gives us as individuals power – if we decide to use it. Our brain has been programmed from the moment we are both and there are power programmers in our life such as our friends, family and the people we work with. However, we can actively input new programmes, ideally positive programmes, to impact our future. 

 

Chapter 9 to 15 breaks out the seven rules of neuroplasticity one by one so you get a proper understanding of the rules. The rules are mindfulness, choices, intention, focus, repetition, emotion and belief. 

 

Then the book explores the concept of self-talk and the role that plays in programming. Shad shares how affirmations and self-talk are different and helps the reader understand exactly what good self-talk is. 

 

The end of the book looks at the 12 positive attitudes that he personally thinks every human should wire in, how to engage in neuron-building activities, and a 31 day of mindfulness challenge. 

 

The final chapter talks about will and the reader is left with the reminder “I think, therefore I can change”.
