The Power of Small – Book Review – PropelHer’s Book Club

The Power of Small by Aisling and Trish Leonard-Curtin

On Monday 4th April 2020 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed The Power of Small: How To Make Tiny But Powerful Changes When Everything Feels Too Much by Aisling and Trish Leonard-Curtin.

In this summary of The Power of Small, I will be briefly summarising the book to help you make a decision about whether you should buy a copy and read the book.

The book is broken down into:

  • Introduction
  • The Small Basics
  • Part One: The Comfort Trap
  • Part Two: From The Inside Out
  • Part Three: The Power of Small Toolkit
  • Part Four: Make The Power of Small Way of Life
  • Epilogue

In the beginning, the aim of the book is clearly stated. The aim isto teach you the smallest skills, which will result in the maximum positive impact on your life”. The authors also share that “The Power of Small is grounded in the tenets of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).”

Early on in the book, the reader is introduced to a key tool of the Power of Small which is “the 5-minute breakout”. As you might be able to guess the idea is devoting just 5 minutes to do something. However, it normally isn’t about just doing anything. It is specifically doing something to push you outside your comfort zone (so you can grow and transform) but within your self-care zone. The 5-minute breakout perfect aligns with their message that small actions count. The authors truly believe in the power of small actions and they state that “Every small action or inaction we encounter on a daily basis has an impact on how we live.”

Once they’ve explained why small actions are powerful and laid down foundation concept they move into Part Two: From The Inside Out. This part of the book is all about your mind and your emotions. Then Part Three: The Power of Small Toolkit is where you finally get to find 15 tools that you can use yourself. Finally, at the end, there is a “small takeaway” that gives you 9 key takeaways.

Overall this book provides you with a solid understanding of why making small changes can transform your life. You are also provided with a toolkit of tasks that can be done in a short amount of time. You are also encouraged to use a journal alongside the book to ensure you are actually completing the tasks.

Like the sound of The Power of Small by Aisling and Trish Leonard-Curtin. Why not buy a copy of the book and read it yourself?
