Three things to forget about when choosing your goals

To be successful you have to set goals, but choosing your goals can be difficult. There is a lot of advice about how to create your goals, but this article is all about the things you should ignore during your goal setting process.

As a success coach for ambitious women I spend a lot of time talking about success and how to achieve it. What really saddens me is how many seemingly successful women are actually unhappy and want more from life. And the reason why? Because they went after someone else’s version of success.

So in this video I am going to outline three things you need to forget about when creating your goals and deciding what you want to achieve in life.

FORGET ABOUT SOCIETY

As far as I am concerned it takes a lot of work to be successful, so if you are going to put the time, energy and effort so if you are going to do that it needs to be for you and no-one else. So don’t set your life goals based on your friends, your family or society. At the end of the day this is your life and you need to be true to yourself and live it how you want to.

FORGET ABOUT BEING REALISTIC

Another common reason why people don’t go after their real dream is because it isn’t realistic. When you was little what did you want to be? I wanted to be a popstar. Now I didn’t have the talent but I also remember so many people telling me it wasn’t realistic. I would have never have known if it could have happened or not because I never gave it a go. And the truth is lots of people have unrealistic dreams.

No one knows what you are really capable of so how can they say if it is possible for you or not? Also, a lot of people are just pushing their insecurities onto you. So have an unrealistic goal, a fabulous one and go for it. If it really lights you up inside then don’t worry if it is realistic or not.

FORGET ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Some people’s wildest dreams will involve having to beat off lots of competition. Only so many people can be a New York Times bestseller or featured on Entrepreneur. The truth is that competition is everywhere. Honestly, you can’t be successful and spend your whole life avoiding competition. So admit that the field you are trying to get into is difficult; be aware it is going to take some work to join the elite and face the challenge head on.
