Last week’s post was How To Find a Mentor and Make the Most of the Relationship and I received so many emails from people saying how much they needed that video. When it comes from getting support from others a mentor is the most known way. However, you can also look at getting a coach, an accountability partner or joining a mastermind.

I came across the concept of Mastermind in Napeloen Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich. Napeloen’s definition of a mastermind is “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.” I would personally describe an a mastermind as “a group of people who come to together for a specific purpose and the combined knowledge and experience means the sum of the group is more powerful that the individuals in it.

In my experience masterminds have been gamechangers for me. But to ensure you get the most out of a mastermind you should consider the following 3 things:

1 – WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?

A good mastermind will be a source of knowledge and help you to learn. Personally, I think there are 2 types of masterminds that can be effective for increasing your success. The first type of mastermind will be people in the same industry or profession as you. This will enable you to be in a circle of people who are able to help you to stay up-to-date and at the forefront of your industry. The second type of mastermind is where everyone has a different profession and the different perspective helps you to learn lots and build a well-rounded view. This can be super powerful because they are making you aware of what you don’t know. This can be really helpful for entrepreneurs.

2 – WILL IT CHALLENGE YOU?

For a mastermind to help you to be more successful than being in the mastermind has to challenge you. A mastermind should inspire you to show up as your best self. I am part of a mastermind and every week we share a goal for the week ahead that will be our champagne moment if we achieve. The important thing is that goals has to be something that is really pushing us or really helping you us to move forward. If someone says something that doesn’t sound that challenging we will push back. This challenging will help an individual to set a bigger goal and as a result achieve more.

3 – WILL YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND CONFIDENT?

Whilst a mastermind should challenge you, and push you out of your comfort zone, it must be a place where you feel comfortable and confident enough to share your experiences, fears and worries. If you are in a mastermind where you feel that everyone is ahead of you then this might result in your not opening up in the same way and not getting the most out of the group. This is why you should really think about what level the other people in the mastermind are at and where you are right now.

That is my top 3 tips for things to consider before joining a mastermind. I think masterminds are so powerful and especially if right now you feel a 1:1 coach is out of reach then check out whether the coach you like offers a mastermind as a number do.

I would love to know in the comments below if you have ever been in a mastermind or if there is a mastermind you would like to be a part of.
