I am a lover of setting goals and through PropelHer I share lots of advice and resources to help you set and achieve your goals.

Recently, someone asked in the PropelHer Facebook Group whether they should set goals that were in their control. The comment was from an entrepreneur and she felt that setting a goal of 10 customers wasn’t right to set since she didn’t control that.

That question inspired me to create this post about the two types of tracking you should be doing when working towards a goal

TRACKING 1 – TRACKING THE RESULTS

When you are setting your goals, they should be SMART.

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time-bound

Now it is the measurable aspect of a goal that you can track against. For example, if you said you would like to lose weight and be 8 stone then each week you could track your weight to check you are moving closer to your goal until you achieve it.

TRACKING 2 – TRACKING YOUR ACTIONS

Now the other thing you should be doing is tracking your goals in relation to the actions you are taking. Using the previous example again, if your goal is to lose weight and reach 8 stone then you could be tracking the number of exercise sessions you have been doing, the number of steps you have been taking each day or the number of calories you have eaten.

The reason why tracking your actions is important is because you are measuring if you are doing the work.

If you aren’t achieving your goal you need to be able to work out why. By tracking your actions you will be able to see if:

1) You haven’t been taking the actions you know you need to take

or

2) You have been taking the actions and still not getting the results.

If you are taking the actions and still not getting the results then you know you need to change your actions.

So go back to your list of goals and work out how you can track your results and your actions.

I would love to know the comments below one set of actions you are going to track as you work towards a goal.
