Why you need to give up some of your goals in order to achieve more success

GIVING UP SOME OF MY GOALS - PROPELHER

How many goals do you currently have on your list? 1? 10? 50?
Well, it may be time to shorten your goals list. Find out below why you may need to give up on some of your goals in order to achieve more success.

I love goals. I love working with women to help them set goals and then achieve those goals. Normally, I am writing about getting clear on your goals so I know it may seem odd that this blog post is about giving up on some goals.

However, there are two reasons you might need to get rid of some goals

1 – They aren’t aligned with your biggest vision and true to you

2 – You have too many goals to be productive

Let’s look at the first reason.

Now, if you write your goals in isolation you can end up with goals that don’t support your bigger vision and that isn’t what you want.

For example, if your goal is to work full-time in your business by next year, then having a goal of working an extra 10 hours a week to get a promotion isn’t in line with your bigger vision. Now in this example, it is obvious they don’t go together, but the alignment of your goals might be more subtle. So a great way to ensure your goals are aligned is to work backwards.

TASK – Write on a piece of paper your goals for 5/10 years from now. Then write your goals for 1 year from now and then look at the goals you currently have. Do your current goals support the 1-year goals? And then the does your 1-year goal support your 5 or 10-year goals. Are your goals helping to move you in the right direction for you? If not, remove those goals now.

Now let’s look at the second reason – having too many goals to be productive

A very common tool in the coaching industry for goal setting is the wheel of life. This splits your life up into numerous areas (usually 8) such as finance, health, fun, family, love, business/career etc. And then you rate your life in each area and set goals on how you can improve each area. Whilst that is great for creating a balanced life, the fact is it can result in you have too many goals. Too many goals can be overwhelming and result in an individual taking no action at all, which isn’t what you want.

TASK – Write a list of your current goals. List everything you are trying to achieve. Then work out what are your main priorities. Choose between 3-5. Now these are goals that you will actively be working on and the others you can write down and save for when you have achieved the goals you have decided to currently focus on. Having just 3-5 goals will help you to stay focus and be able to take action.

Now whilst you have your list of goals I want you to think. Is there a goal that you have set multiple times, that you should have achieved by now and haven’t

If so, then I have a great new 7-day course to help you finally achieve those pesky goals that you keep setting again and again and you just don’t seem to be able to cross them of your list. It’s called “Say Goodbye To Your Deja Zu Goals” and over the course of a week I will lead you through my top tips for setting your goal, creating an achievable action plan and getting started on smashing that goal. You can access that free course at www.propelher.co.uk/dejavugoals

Now, I would love to know in the comments below what goal you are going to let go of, or a goal you have previously let go of and how that made you feel.

Thanks for writing this. Sometimes it takes an objective view to help us see more clearly and I can see now I just have too many goals. I need to write that list for 1 year and ten, and see if it helps my objectivity and stops me feeling like a manic hamster on a super charged wheel ! X

      Hi Sarah,

You are welcome. I am glad to hear you found it useful and it has helped you to realise you have too many goals. Whilst it is great to be ambitious and set lots of goals, there does become a point where it is counterproductive. I hope writing your list of ten year goals and one year goals can help you to work out where your focus needs to be going.

      Wishing you all the best,
      Charelle
